THE GATEWAY TO AFRICA
Tangier, vibrant and mysterious, has been a refuge, inspiration and welcoming city for numerous artists and writers. Only a short distance from Tarifa and Gibraltar, the three cities form a perfect triangle. Three countries and three languages lapped by two shores.
The Gateway to Africa, as it is known, is caressed by the Levante and Poniente winds. Punta Paloma (Spain) can be seen in the distance across the Strait of Gibraltar. There is the smell of saltpetre. At regular intervals as you wander through the alleys of the Medina you can glimpse where the sky joins the sea. At the renowned Café de Paris on the French Plaza, the chairs are perfectly placed for the visitor to view the organised chaos of cars, tourists, foreigners, farmers and locals that come and go at rush hour. Many hotels are recognisable from famous films, an indelible footprint of the modern place that Tangier has always been. On the outskirts of Tangier is Cap Spartel, the
most northerly lighthouse of Africa, where any background noise gives way to the sound of the Atlantic with its long beaches of fine sand. There is more to discover in Morocco .....
